Red Creatures Everywhere!

Can you imagine a place wherever you go you will see red crawling organisms around? They’re around your house, around your office, in the shops and on the roads! Whenever you drive you can’t avoid but crush them and feel your tyres squashing them down the concrete and hear the eerie sound! Yes folks you heard it right and I’m talking about “crabs”. See them coming..

Up close and personal with a crab lost in the office!

Crab lost in the garden..

Caution sign..

The name of the place is “Christmas Island” a territory of Australia. The island is located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, 5 hours flying time away from Perth, Western Australia and 500 kms south of Jakarta, Indonesia. The island was discovered on Christmas day in 1643 by a British explorer. The soil in the island is rich in phosphate and at the present the economy of the island depends upon the phosphate mining. I was given the opportunity to visit the island and discovered the great sceneries it offers other than the crabs.

Still interested about the story of the crabs? Let’s go and check wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Island_red_crab

Hey.. no fair linking to Wikipedia!

Those crabs looks very strong. They look like they have been working out..
    With dumbbells or something..

    Do those crabs bite?

Yes the crabs have huge arms and look very strong probably they’ve been working out using dumbbells.

I remember seeing little kids playing the crabs and I don’t know if they’re bitten. I tried to hold one of them but I hold the back part only so it does not have the chance to bite me. I was planning to cook and eat them thinking that I will have strong arms as well but one of the locals say they can’t be eaten. Haha..

Maybe it’s only in Australia, but when they come to the Philippines they are much edible! hehe

Wow! This is pure photographic genius if I do say so myself!! That was one of the best work trips ever!! Swinging off a monkey swing into the sea after work and then riding a bike around the island on the weekend - including going through the casino that we got chased away from! I always giggle about when we got to that HUGE hill and how u seeing a black cat (that came out of NOWHERE) meant that we had to turn around!! Crazy stuff!

Hmm… interesting stuff. I saw this before in one of those national geographic episodes. These red crabs head out to the beach on full moon to lay their eggs, I think (not sure though). The weird part is that these crabs are land crabs and can’t swim. It’s really a funny picture seeing them get washed by the tides as they seem to be jumping and raising their claws up high in the air as possible to avoid drowning, but the sad part is that some of them died.
